About Mary Klawetter

I was born in Brooklyn, New York but spent my childhood in Iceland. There was always one art project or another going on in our family such as knitting, painting and mosaics. My mother is a wonderful oil, maryportrait.bmp (846774 bytes)watercolor and acrylic artist, with many shows and awards in her name (visit her website). My father made beautiful copper and mosaic pieces of art. I found my love in sewing. There was limited television in the 1950's so it was the stories of the ancient, imaginary inhabitants of Iceland that sparked my dreams. I think that much of my work comes from the stories of elves, trolls and Huldufolk, the "hidden folk".
We moved back to America in the mid 1960’s where we finally settled down at the Jersey Shore.
The first doll book that I bought was "Old Fashioned Dolls and Toys". A big, beautiful book by Better Homes and Garden. I loved that book. I then started to buy " Cloth Doll Magazines", but when I found Susanna Oroyan’s book "Anatomy of a Doll" a few years later well…that is when my imagination woke up. I now work with my own original patterns never quite knowing what the final piece will look like.
I met my husband in Ocean County Collage and after 38 years of marriage, three children and three grandchildren I am enjoying my family, my art and my garden.
Many joys have come from making dolls but the biggest joy has been all the wonderful women that I can now call  friends.

Some of my dolls were in the "inspirations " section of "Soft Dolls and Animals, in 2006.
